Nursing InformaticsThe Board of Directors for 2012 and 2013 was selected by CNIA members in the Fall of 2011. President

Mandate: To provide leadership and direction for the organization and the Board of Directors. To be the chief representative of CNIA in all public and professional activities and and oversees the management of CNIA finances.

Margaret Ann Kennedy, RN BScN MN PhD - Merigomish, NS

Margaret is an experienced informatics educator and consultant, with a PhD in Nursing from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, University of South Australia and a Master of Nursing from Dalhousie University, in addition to her CPHIMS-CA professional designation. She is currently a Senior Consultant, Business Analysis and Clinical SME for Global Village Consulting Inc

Margaret previously held a faculty position at the School of Nursing, St. Francis Xavier University and taught part time in the Master of Nursing program at Athabasca University. A seasoned leader in NI, she held senior positions including Director of Standards, Standards Collaborative at Canada Health Infoway, as well as Director of Client Engagement for NS Logix, an innovative applied health informatics firm in Nova Scotia. As Principal for Kennedy Health Informatics Inc., she continues to focus on variety of projects with diverse stakeholders and NI education through the National Institute for Nursing Informatics, and Athabasca University.

Margaret has an extensive background in health informatics and nursing practice, and was a member of the Pan-Canadian iEHR Clinical Terminology Integration (CTI) Group, a reviewer for SNOMED CT terminology value sets, a member and past Chair of the Pan-Canadian Clinical Standards Sub-committee, and the Co-Chair of the Event Programme Task Force for the Standards Collaborative. She is a significant contributor to the CHOBIC project, leading the initial mapping to ICNP® and supporting the mapping to SNOMED CT. Margie is also Chair of the Process Improvement Committee (PIC) at HL7 International, as well as a committee member of the eHealth Safety Task Force at COACH.




President Elect

Mandate: To assist the President in administering the business of the organization as provided in the by-laws. Promotes the purposes of the organization.

Patricia Rothney, MA(c) BN RN - Winnipeg, MB

Patricia is the Manitoba e-Health Manager, Nursing Informatics Strategy. Her role is to guide and facilitate clinical transformation and promote clinician engagement and informatics knowledge within the general clinician population and projects. She acts as a translator and informatics champion in the pre-project phase of initiatives that involve the incorporation of technology in practice and practice change. Patricia has extensive nursing experience in Pediatric Critical Care, Maternal Child Nursing, and Informatics.

Patricia is focused on clinical engagement in the design and practice decisions for the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and other clinical systems, ensuring clinical relevance, use and adoption of these tools. She also represents Manitoba eHealth on committees and initiatives with Canada Health Infoway such as the Clinical Sub-Committee of the SCCC; the EHR Data Working Group – a sub-group of the Infoway Clinical Adoption Nursing Reference Group, and led the Manitoba Nursing Peer to Peer Network.

Patricia was a founding member of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) (2001) and the Manitoba Nursing Informatics Association (MNIA) (2002). In the fall of 2011 Patricia completed her Master of Arts in Leadership Health at Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C.

Mandate: To support leadership and direction for the organization and the Board of Directors. To support the chief representative of CNIA in all public and professional activities.

Eithne Reichert, RN, BScN, MN, PMP - Saskatchewan

Eithne holds a Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan and is a certified Project Management Professional. Eithne’s clinical background covers over 20 years experience in acute care, critical care, nursing education and management/administration. She has led clinical information projects in different health settings; clinical systems development;, manual and electronic health record service projects since 1998, and more recently as an Independent Consultant in health care informatics projects with various regional and provincial health organizations. She has participated in a number of national working groups for health informatics, providing a voice for the front line clinician and their requirements. Eithne’s interest also lies in supporting the clinical transformation, and as such, is an advocate for Nurses to be engaged in the processes. Eithne is one of the founding members of the Saskatchewan Nursing Informatics special interest group.




Treasurer

Mandate: In development and subject to Member Approval

Tracy Shaben - Edmonton, Alberta

Tracy currently works as the Clinical Coordinator for Informatics at the University of Alberta Hospitals/Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. She received her Master's in Nursing in 1992 with clinical nursing expertise in Pediatrics specifically nephrology and oncology. In 1993, Tracy moved into the world of clinical informatics and for over 15 years has been leading a variety of clinical software implementations in acute care and ambulatory settings across BC and Alberta. Tracy has been involved in national health informatics initiatives including CNIA as jurisdictional representative and conference planning committee member since 2005; Canada Health Infoway's Nurses Advisory Group advising on End-user nursing engagement strategies and Pan-Canadian Peer to Peer Network initiative; and C-HOBIC workshop participant on mapping Canadian clinical outcomes using ICNP. Tracy represents the Canadian Nurses Association as Alternate to Kathryn Hannah on Canada Health Infoway's Standards Collaborative Strategic Committee. Tracy has been active in organizations such as COACH presenting at e-Health conferences and will co-present a poster at the upcoming NI2012 conference. Alberta currently does not have a Nursing Informatics Group, Tracy would like to work with other nurses to develop this group. Director of Membership Services

Mandate: In collaboration with the members of the executive committee, provides leadership in the area of membership recruitment, membership growth and membership development.

Mary Eileen MacPhail BScN, RN – Halifax, Nova Scotia (Interim, position available!)

Mary Eileen is currently a Clinical Informatics Coordinator at Capital District Health Authority in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This role functions as the link between Clinical and Information Technology, analyzing clinical procedures in relation to manual and automated systems. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Mary Eileen also completed a Certificate in Information Technology Solutions from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Nova Scotia.

For the past several years Mary Eileen has held the secretary position for the Nova Scotia Nursing Informatics Group. At present, she is president.




Director of Communications

Mandate: To maintain internal and external communications on behalf of CNIA

Val Cartmel, RN, BScN, MA - North Vancouver, British Columbia

Val currently works at Providence Health Care (PHC) in Vancouver, BC. She is the Practice Consultant for Clinical Informatics in the Professional Practice Office. In her role she provides leadership in relation to informatics initiatives at PHC. Val has been actively involved in the Nursing Informatics world since the early 1980's at the provincial and national level as a founding member of the former BC Nursing Informatics group, COACH Nursing Informatics, and CNIA. She is a past BC jurisdictional representative for CNIA and has been involved in conference planning and participated in numerous Informatics committees at the provincial and national level. In addition Val sat on the CNA board as president of CRNBC from 2008-2010.




Director of Education

Mandate: In collaboration with the members of the executive committee, provides leadership in the area of education.

Cheryl Stephens-Lee, RN MScNI - Fredericton, NB

Cheryl Stephens-Lee has 27 years experience working in the healthcare industry. Over the span of her career she has worked in the nursing areas of General Surgery, Emergency Department, Discharge Planning, Telehealth and as the Emergency Department Information System Coordinator. Her keen interest in informatics has led her to obtain her MScNI from the University of Iowa. She is currently employed as a "Clinical Systems Analyst" on the Patient Care Team for FacilicorpNB. She has published articles in the Canadian Journal of Nursing Informatics on topics relating to the workflow of the Emergency Department admitted patients; identifying and categorizing health information system gaps; and determining whether an information system supports the organizations mission. In her current role as the New Brunswick Nursing Informatics Group (NBNIG) Education Executive member she is facilitating the development of a Nursing Informatics Journal Club (NIJC) Community of Practice (CoP) on the Canadian Nurses Association NurseOne portal and is an active participant in the Canada Health Infoway, Clinical Adoption (Nursing Reference Group) on the EHR Data. She lives in Fredericton with her husband where she enjoys running along the riverfront trail and cooking vegetarian food.

Alberta – Patricia Morgan




British Columbia – Leanne Currie, RN DNSc

Leeanne has been actively engaged in nursing, biomedical, and health informatics research and professional activities since 1999. She is from Vancouver, British Columbia. Between 1988 and 2010 she worked as a nurse in the US. Leeanne have a Master’s in Nursing Informatics from the University of California (2001) and a doctorate in nursing with a focus in Nursing Informatics from Columbia University in New York City. For her doctoral studies she was funded as a pre-doctoral trainee by the National Library of Medicine through the Department of Biomedical Informatics also at Columbia University. Her funded research has revolved around patient safety informatics with projects examining clinical decision support for fall-injury prevention and for antimicrobial prescribing using a sociotechnical approach to system development and user interface design. Her masters and doctoral trainees have been exposed to multiple activities including research, teaching and national and international presentations and their work has focused on interdisciplinary communication, clinical decision support and nursing informatics. As an active member of the international nursing informatics community, Leeanne has worked with researchers and practitioners in this exciting field. She is currently on the scientific program committee for the Nursing Informatics conference to be held in Montreal in 2012.




Manitoba – Heather Wiens




Ontario – Lynn Tkac, RN BA MHSc

Lynn Tkac is a Project Manager at Rouge Valley Health System, an acute care community hospital serving east Toronto and west Durham region in Ontario. She has over 30 years experience in the health care sector, with a current focus on clinical informatics. Lynn provides clinical leadership that supports the evolution of the electronic health record (EHR), and represents health care professionals in the planning and implementation of projects promoting electronic access to and management of information that supports quality patient care. Lynn is also actively engaged in efforts to promote the EHR regionally and provincially, serving on several advisory boards and informatics interest groups. Lynn is currently Past President of the Ontario Nursing Informatics Group. Lynn is a founding member of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association and is on the editorial board of the association’s journal. She is a Registered Nurse, with a BA (Health Studies) from York University, and a Master of Health Studies, Athabasca University.




Quebec – François-Régis Fréchette

François-Régis Fréchette, gradué infirmier en 1989, a soigné au chevet de différentes clientèles avant de relever le défi de gestion en milieu hospitalier en 2001. François-Régis est maintenant conseiller à la gestion des produits &équipements médicaux et chirurgicaux à la direction des soins infirmiers et pratiques professionnelles au CSSS de Gatineau. Il détient un baccalauréat en Sciences infirmières de l’Université du Québec en Outaouais.

Présentement, il est vice-président et membre fondateur de l’Association des conseils des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec; président de la Commission infirmière régionale de l’Outaouais et membre du conseil de section de l'Ordre régional des infirmières et infirmiers de l’Outaouais depuis 1997.

Son attirance relative aux technologies de l’information relié à la prestation sécuritaire de soins s’est développée lors de l’implantation d’un système de traçabilité en centrale de stérilisation et depuis cet intérêt est sans cesse croissant face aux outils disponibles.

François-Régis is pleased to hold a CNIA executive board position as a jurisdictional representative member of the Association québécoise des infirmières et infirmiers en systèmes et technologies de l’information (AQIISTI).




Newfoundland – Pat Walsh




Northwest Territories - Paul McCaskill

Paul McCaskill has been a Registered Nurse for eight years In that time has worked in Neurology, Criminology, Cardiac Surgery, RAI Educator and Long Term Care Educator. Paul McCaskill currently works as the eHealth Clinical Implementation Specialist for the Government of the Northwest Territories. As such he works for the Information Services in the Department of Health and Social Services, translating geek to nurse and back. Is main projects have been the NWT HealthNet Viewer and the Electronic Health Record. Is the technology representative to the Northern Nurses Leadership Network. In his free time Paul works with Army Cadets and does stage crew for various local productions.




Nova Scotia – Nancy McCara




New Brunswick – Kate Burns

Kate Burns graduated from the University of New Brunswick Nursing Program and accumulated 20 years of combined bedside nursing and management experience in medicine and intensive care units before moving to informatics. She became interested in informatics when seconded as part of a River Valley Health (now part of Horizon Health Network) team to automate nursing workload and care planning in 1999. In 2000, she accepted the position of Regional Documentation Coordinator when it was realized that work was required in both documentation design and content before complete automation would be possible. It was from this position that Kate became internal lead, eDocumentation Project Manager, for a major 2 year project. focused on the automation of clinical documentation for nursing and allied health services. The organization received a Knowledge Innovation Recognition Award (KIRA) in May 2008 for this project. In January 2009 Kate accepted her current position as the Regional Director of Nursing Informatics for Horizon Health Network.




Saskatchewan – Della Stumborg, RN, BScN

Della Stumborg is a Nurse Peer leader with the Saskatchewan Health Information Network, a division of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health. Della has worked in various nursing roles in Saskatchewan, most recently for 8 years as a Nursing Practice Advisor with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association (SRNA). Her clinical background includes Public Health, Long Term Care, Education and Administration. Since 2009 Della has started her own home-based Nursing Consulting business, DS Nursing Solutions, and continues to work as a casual Public Health Nurse in Cypress Health Region. Over the years, Della has been an advocate for Best Practices in Nursing and has a keen professional and personal interest in the utilization of Health Informatics as a tool to enhance nursing practice and affect patient outcomes. Della is a member of the Sask. Nursing Informatics Group, as well as a recent member of the CNIA Executive as Saskatchewan’s representative. She has also been part of the editorial panel for NurseOne, and has participated in many Canada Health Infoway activities since its inception. Della is a strong advocate for the input of frontline nurses into IT solutions, as well as the needs of the public in the development of e-health solutions. Della was recently appointed as a public representative to the Saskatchewan Law Society. Della is married to Mark, and they have 3 adult children and one son-in-law. Della lives and is involved in the community of Swift Current, SK in various volunteer activities.
