In this webinar, the impact of digital technologies on the environment and climate change will be explored, from both a detriment and benefits perspective. Issues of technological redundancy and unsustainability; dealing with alarming waste from digital products (e-waste); and use of rare or non-renewable resources (e.g., precious metals) will be discussed, coupled with potential solutions. As well, we will look at some benefits of digital technologies on the environment such as how big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence can be used to research environmental impacts and solutions; the transition to paperless systems which reduces the need to cut trees, and how technology can be used to support sustainability initiatives.
